The action on big trout exploded this week at Irvine Lake, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "We had a monster 20-4 rainbow weighed in; it’s our biggest trout of the season so far," Getty enthused. "It was caught at Boat Dock Cove on an orange 3-inch Berkley Power Trout Worm by Mario Garcielita of Whittier, who saw the fish jumping around a couple of times during the afternoon and did not give up in trying to hook it. He was using just 2-pound test line and landed the fish in about 10 minutes."

Getty continued, "There were too many big trout between 5 and 8 pounds to even keep track of this week; we had over 100 trout above 5 pounds on Saturday and Sunday alone! The trout bite overall has been very good, and it is about a 50-50 ratio of bait fish to troll fish for the boat anglers. The bite for shore anglers has also been very good at Boat Dock Cove and Woody’s Cove. We are also seeing a few more brown trout showing up on the stringers."

Productive baits this week were Power Bait, Gulp! and nightcrawlers for bait dunkers. Trollers stayed with the reliable firetiger-color Rapala Countdown in CD03 and CD05 sizes. Hotspots included Boat Dock Cove, Trout Island, Woody’s Cove, the west shoreline and Santiago Flats.

Bass anglers are still finding decent numbers of 2- to 6-pound largemouth. Most of the fish are located at 25 to 40 feet in the traditional deep-water hard-structure spots off the Red Clay Cliffs and Rocky Point, and are hitting on jigs and Carolina-rigged plastics. A fair number of bass also have moved up into all of the newly flooded vegetation and are biting on crankbaits at about 15 feet.

Extra gravel has been added to open up the road to Trout Island for vehicle traffic again. Anglers are cautioned to call ahead for up-to-the-minute road conditions, as things can change quickly during and after rainstorms. With the road to Trout Island rebuilt, the Kids Lagoon again exists as a separate entity. Families with children ages 12 and younger found decent action on trout in the 1- to 3-pound class in the lagoon. Surface water temperature in the main lake is 61 degrees.

This coming weekend’s tournament will be a "2 for " special deal. Enter the tournament on Saturday, weigh-in at least one fish of any size and earn a pass to come back the next day for free. Tournament winners will be determined by cumulative weights from both days.

Outstanding catches of the week included:

– Mario Garcielita of Whittier, 20-4 rainbow trout on a Power Trout Worm at Boat Dock Cove.
– Galinda Cooper of Pasadena, 13-2 rainbow trout on an SC Shiner at mid-lake.
– Sam Tagaloa of Orange, 13-0 rainbow trout on a mini jig at Boat Dock Cove.
– Raul Talingo of Orange, 12-0 rainbow trout on Power Bait at the flats.
– Trent Dubuque of Fountain Valley, 12-0 rainbow trout on Power Bait/nightcrawler at the south shore.
– Brent Johnson of Anaheim, 10-10 rainbow trout on Power Bait at the west shore.
– Gene Case of Fallbrook, 10-8 rainbow trout on a Rapala at Boat Dock Cove.
– Jiang Chun of China, 10-6 rainbow trout on a sabiki at Boat Dock Cove.
– Alfonzo Cervantes of Los Angeles, 10-4 rainbow trout on Power Bait at Trout Island.
– Bob Nordstrom of Placentia, 10-2 rainbow trout on Rapala at mid-lake.
– Nick Northrup of Lake Forest, 9-4 rainbow trout on a Flickershad at mid-lake.
– John Gilabert of Santa Ana, 9-0 rainbow trout on a Rapala at the west shore.
– Hubert Zamora of Long Beach, 6-8 steelhead on a Rapala at mid-lake.
– Ricardo Zepeda of Newport Beach, 3-8 brown trout on Power Bait at the south shore.
– Dan Kadota of San Pedro, 3-6 brown trout on Power Bait at Boat Dock Cove.
– Timmy Ho of Rosemead, 5-5 largemouth bass (released), on a Bevy Shad at Trout Island.
– Hubert Zamora of Long Beach, 5-trout limit totaling 35-1, on Rapalas at mid-lake.

The water level at Irvine Lake is still as full as it can get, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. “The spillway is still trickling over, but will run strongly again anytime it rains.” observed Getty. “Expect the water level to be high for a long time.”

Getty added, “The first batch of 14- to 20-pound trophy rainbows also went into the lake this week, and I saw one fish that was every bit of 25 pounds. All of the big ones looked good and healthy. We will have another bunch of these monster trout just before the MLK holiday weekend.

“The overall trout bite is still decent, with the ‘old school’ nightcrawler under a bobber trick being the best thing going right now, especially over at Woody’s Cove. The trollers have also started catching fish by sticking with very bright colors like firetiger and hot pink.”

Bait dunkers soaking Power Bait did best with very bright colors, with extra garlic spray added to help the fish zero in on it in the stained water. Ditto trollers going with the brightest-possible Rapala colors, like firetiger, hot pink, and clown (chartreuse/red).

Productive bait-fishing spots included Boat Dock Cove, Trout Island, and Woody’s Cove; while trolling spots included mid-lake, Santiago Flats and along the west shoreline.

Most of the trout on the stringers are rainbows in the 2- to 6-pound range, with an assortment of brown trout, steelhead, and larger-grade rainbows keeping things interesting. Now that the giant trout are loose in the lake, anglers are cautioned to have a big salmon-size net handy, as trying to fit a huge fish into a tiny trout net is one of the most common ways that the big one gets away.

Bass anglers are finding moderate numbers of 2- to 5-pound largemouth at 30 feet near the Red Clay Cliffs and Rocky Point, mostly hitting on jigs and dropshot-rigged plastics. Catfish chasers can score a few 2- to 4-pound whiskerfish by soaking mackerel or nightcrawlers where water is flowing into the lake.

A pedestrian-only footbridge to the base of Trout Island is in full operation, and the road to Woody’s Cove is open to vehicles pending continuing dry weather. The Kids Lagoon has been inundated and will be part of the main lake for up to a month or more.

Outstanding catches of the week included:

– Mardy Kuch of Long Beach, 14-14 rainbow trout on Power Bait at Boat Dock Cove.
– 11-year-old Natasha Back of Mission Viejo, 10-10 rainbow trout on a nightcrawler in the lagoon area.
– John Grandi of Irvine, 10-6 rainbow trout on an Owner Cultiva at Trout Island.
– Primo Bautista of Long Beach, 4-2 steelhead on a nightcrawler at the west shore.
– Eduardo Tsuneshige of Irvine, 3-2 steelhead on a Power Mouse at Boat Dock Cove.
– Adam Baker of Costa Mesa, 4-3 largemouth bass (released) on a jig at the Red Clay Cliffs.
– Mitz Onizuka of Irvine, 3-8 channel catfish on mackerel at the flats.
– Danny Jackson of Yorba Linda, 3-1 hybrid striped bass (released) on mackerel at the flats.

Although salmon are remarkably adaptive, they still are not able to overcome the strains mankind has put upon them.

Non-sustainable fishing practices and loss of spawning habitat have both contributed to steep declines within the salmon population – so much so that the commercial salmon fishing industry in California and Oregon were forced to cancel the commercial salmon season for the second year in a row.

In response, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke has extended a 2008 disaster declaration along the West Coast, and released $53.1 million in relief funds for the communities affected by the collapse of the salmon stocks.

California’s Sacramento River Chinook salmon are the foundation of the West Coast’s commercial salmon harvest and in typical years 400,000 to 600,000 of them return to spawn. In 2008, barely 66,000 Chinook returned to their spawning grounds in the system. Agency biologists said the 2008 collapse was triggered primarily by climatic conditions that produced little food in the ocean, compounded by too much reliance on fish produced in hatcheries instead of the wild.

You can find more info at the NOAA site.

Although his final day got off to a bad start even before he got to the lake, Chris Lane hooked 41lbs, 2oz over 3 days to win his second BASS tournament on Lake Okeechobee this week.

Seems his brother and fellow competitor, Bobby Lane, backed his boat trailer into Chris’ truck nearly ripping the driver’s door off at the hinges at the hotel they were staying at!

Others may have thought it was a bad omen but not Chris… he got out on the water, settled into fishing and won the tournament.

Making long casts with the Gambler Cane Toad and a steady, medium retrieve worked to get Chris the most bites.

“I missed an 8 pounder, a 6 pounder and two 5-pound fish,” Chris said, “but I didn’t let it get me down. You have to have mental toughness to be a tournament angler and to fish baits like these. Luckily, the right hook made a big difference, and I was able to land most of my strikes.”

Congrats Chris!

According to their website:

Reel Fishing: Angler’s Dream offers beautiful, picturesque fishing locales, from calm, tranquil lakes to the beaches of tropical paradises.
