We here at Beach Trading love all things ocean – and that includes eating fish!!
We also care about the environment, (including our own internal one), and so when we got this notice about the labeling of organic fish we thought we’d pass it along as it’s something we care about.
Next week, the National Organics Standards Board will decide whether fish raised in farms that contaminate the environment – or exposed to mercury and highly toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) – can be labeled organic.
We, (along with many other groups), hope the NOSB will not allow this to happen! Certifying fish that are not fed a 100% certified organic diet and raised in a pollution-free environment would undermine the market achievements made by the aquaculturalists who have gone to the expense to ensure a clean environment and safe food for our families.
Approving such low standards would gut the organic label for food, damage our environment and waterways, and allow toxic fish to be sold under a label it does not deserve. Click here to sign a petition to demand high standards for organically certified fish from the National Organics Standards Board!
You can sign this petition until TOMORROW, (Friday 11/14/08). After Friday the signatures will be delivered to the NOSB so hurry and sign it today!!
