In an effort to protect their children from unnecessary exposure to UV rays, the folks in Kentucky recently passed a law requiring tanning salons to obtain parental consent for children and teens.
Kentucky teens may want that bronzed look for their prom photos this year but their parents will be the ones deciding if it’s worth the added skin cancer risk.
According to the law, written parental consent is required for teenagers 14 to 18 years old, while children under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when using a tanning bed. The tanning salons must keep the signed consent forms on file on the premises, and must also provide a written warning to each customer about the risks associated with tanning beds. Tanning businesses must also register with local health departments and obtain permits annually.
As always it’s good to remind your children to not only worry about UV exposure from a tanning bed but to use sunscreen and wear UV protective clothing whenever they’re outdoors.
