In an effort to improve the safety of pedestrians on it’s campus, the University of Santa Barbara has just installed a skateboard lane through the main campus corridor.
It’s a pilot program and they’ll have to see how well it works before they decide whether to install more lanes around campus.
The skateboard lane has received mixed reviews with some skateboarders happy that the campus is giving them their own space as opposed to just banning skateboards altogether, while others feel the 5 foot wide lane is simply not wide enough and raises the possibility of more accidents not with pedestrians but with other skateboarders.
Campus officials say the summer and fall sessions will be the testing grounds and determine if the skateboards only lane project will be expanded to other portions of the university.
