Hawaii’s Cynthia Derosier is changing lives for troubled teens on the shores of Oahu one wave at a time.
The freelance art director—with help from Hawaii Girls Court and in conjunction with her local Surfrider chapter—has started the Surfrider Spirit Sessions, a six-week program that is run by surfers and is, “aimed at showing troubled teenaged girls how to live better, healthier lives through surfing.”
Derosier’s bigger goal is to take the program to other Surfrider Foundation chapters across the nation. Already, the New Jersey Chapter is interested in using the Spirit Sessions as a model for a gang-prevention program.
