Monster Energy Pipeline Pro Finally Starts Today

January 30th, 2008 · No Comments

The Monster Energy Pipeline Pro, sponsored by Billabong, was suppose to start last Sunday, (January 27th), at at Hawaii’s world famous Banzai Pipeline. But due to strong winds and poor surf conditions the start was put on a day-today watch.

Well, today turned out to be their lucky day! With a 4-5′ NW swell and dropping trades the contest got underway at 8am HST this morning.

The star-studded field of 128 surfers representing 10 nations features 3-time World Champion, Andy Irons, (of Hawaii), along with a slew of proven and talented surfers including Pipeline Masters Rob Machado, (of California), Bruce Irons, (of Hawaii) and Derek Ho, (of Hawaii).

This 3-star ASP World Qualifying Series event carries critical points towards qualification for the elite World Championship Tour.

While the Monster Energy Pipeline Pro is highly attended by international competitors, it is even more valuable for local Hawaiian surfers because it is a rare opportunity for them to compete at home.

The surfers will also be vying for a handful of “golden tickets” into the prestigious Billabong Pipeline Masters that wraps up the world tour here in December.
