Not that we want to beat a city when it’s down but according to a recent story in the Honolulu Advertisers, the city of Waikiki in Hawaii – another tourist and beach vacation destination – is in trouble due to the global recession and economic downturn and it may be a great time to go and do some shopping after a day at the beach or in the surf!
According to sales statistics released by the state of Hawaii tourists’ spending on jewelry, watches, cosmetics and perfume is down about 30 percent over last year. Some big name retailers such as Niketown and Banana Republic have even closed their Waikiki locations.
One Waikiki landmark – the ABC chain of stores – is, “doing OK”, according to president Paul Kosasa. The chain has even continued their growth with their bargain-priced T-shirts, towels, souvenirs and snacks.
Bad news for retailers can mean good news for tourists with many sales and discounts to be found.
